Industrial Landscapes

Following on from previous projects I have continued to explore the theme of industry. Photographing disused industrial spaces located in rural surroundings made me think about the relationship between industrial forms and the natural environment. In trying to explore industrial architecture, I discovered a contradiction in the beauty of aesthetics and the documentary nature of the photograph.

Documenting areas where industry was once thriving, and now stands dormant and empty, functions on two different levels. The first is to provide a permanent visual document of the landscape that may not be around for much longer. The second attempts to photograph providing an emotional detachment from the subject matter. This lends to the photograph the stillness in time that is needed to help us detach and reassess our circumstances.

Might this allow us to take a step back and reconsider what progress really means, and where it is taking us?
